Always tighten structural engine fasteners in a progressive, cross-cross pattern. 12 - 14 ft-lbs (16 - 19 Nm) Camshaft Sprocket Bolts (M5): 7 - 9 ft-lbs (9 - 12 Nm) Cylinder Head Side Cover Bolt: 7 ft-lbs (10 Nm) Tappet/Valve Cover Caps: 9 ft-lbs (12 Nm) Engine Oil Drain Plug: 18 ft-lbs (24 Nm) Flywheel/Rotor Nut: 30 - 35 ft-lbs (40 - 47 Nm) Clutch Hub Locknut: 28 - 32 ft-lbs (38 - 43 Nm) 7. Troubleshooting Common Engine Issues Engine Will Not Start (No Spark)
If the clearance is incorrect, loosen the locknut with a 9mm wrench. Turn the square adjuster screw until the feeler gauge fits perfectly. Hold the adjuster screw firmly in place and torque down the locknut.
| Symptom | Likely Causes | Solutions | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | | No spark, no fuel, low compression | Check spark plug, ignition coil, and CDI unit. Check fuel flow to carburetor. Perform a compression test. | | Engine starts but runs rough / misfires | Dirty carburetor, incorrect valve clearance, spark plug issues | Clean carburetor jets. Adjust valves to 0.05-0.06 mm. Replace spark plug and set gap to 0.6-0.7 mm. | | Engine stalls at idle | Idle speed too low, idle mixture incorrect, vacuum leak | Adjust idle speed screw. Re-adjust idle mixture. Check intake manifold for cracks or loose clamps. | | Loss of power / Poor acceleration | Clogged air filter, worn piston/rings, incorrect ignition timing | Clean or replace air filter. Perform a compression test. Check and set ignition timing. | | Engine overheats | Low oil level, lean air/fuel mixture, riding too hard | Check and refill oil. Check for air leaks and adjust mixture. Allow engine to cool. | | Blue smoke from exhaust | Worn piston rings, valve seal issues, overfilled oil | Replace piston rings and/or valve seals. Drain excess oil. | | Metallic rattling noise | Loose timing chain, worn cam chain tensioner, loose valve adjuster | Replace cam chain tensioner. Adjust valves. Inspect/replace timing chain. | | Transmission issues (hard to find neutral) | Clutch adjustment, worn shift drum, low oil | Adjust clutch cable free play. Change oil with recommended type. Investigate shift mechanism. | | Electrical problems (lights not working) | Faulty stator, damaged wiring, bad ground | Inspect stator for damage (common issue). Check all wiring connections and grounds. | | Vacuum/pressure issues after plug removal | Cam chain tensioner components dislodged, loss of oil pressure | Re-install plunger and spring correctly; avoid removing this plug. | 152fmh engine service manual
Use a new base gasket. Do not apply liquid sealant to the cylinder head or base gaskets; install them completely dry to prevent oil passage blockages.
Incorrect valve clearance leads to hard starting, power loss, and burnt valves. Perform this adjustment only when the engine is completely cold. Always tighten structural engine fasteners in a progressive,
