At these levels, the village has no wall and very few defenders. Hoplites (front line) and Slingers or Archers (back line)

For levels up to 49, Steam Giants are often preferred over Hoplites because they have higher survivability against barbarian swarms.

Barbarian Villages are neutral, AI-controlled settlements in Ikariam that serve as a primary source of (used to build and maintain an army) and occasional resources. Unlike pillaging another player, attacking Barbarians is a low-risk, predictable PvE activity that yields consistent rewards. However, poor preparation can lead to unnecessary troop losses. A Barbarian Village is a non-player enemy location on the same island as your Capital. It is your first opportunity for combat, allowing you to learn the battle system without the risk of attacking other players. Your personal progress against the Barbarian Village is tracked independently and is unique to each player on the island.
